Radiant barriers keep the heat from the sun out of your home. Heat is transferred from the sun into your home using three methods: conduction, convection, and radiation. These three types of heat differ in the way that molecules react to heat, but radiation heat (or radiant heat) has to do with the thermal energy that travels as electromagnetic waves. Radiant barrier installation has to do with protecting your home against this third type of heat using reflective materials.
For homes in hot climates, like those of many of our customers in California and Texas, a radiant heat barrier can help trap in cold air and help our customers avoid overspending on energy bills as a result of huge air conditioning costs. Radiant barriers work by inhibiting radiant heat gain. Radiant energy from the sun heats your roof. The energy travels through your roof assembly by conduction. The hot surface on the underside of your roof, in your attic, radiates heat onto cooler surfaces in your attic, such as your air ducts and the floor of the attic. Radiant barrier materials work to prevent the radiant energy traveling from the hot roof deck to your air ducts and attic floor.
This protective layer is created with the help of radiant barrier insulation, which can be installed during new construction as well as in existing homes. Unlike thermal insulation, like fiberglass batts or blown cellulose, radiant barrier insulation has no R-value and is usually made of foil. Radiant barriers are installed in the attic by stapling the material to the underside of the roof deck, normally on the rafters.

Both cellulose insulation and fiberglass insulation provide excellent thermal insulating power. Solely based on R-value, or resistance value, they can both be installed to resist the flow of heat at relatively the same level. This is commonly expressed as R-13 for walls and R-38 for attics. Fiberglass is naturally resistant to fire, whereas cellulose is treated with a fire retardant. During the installation, cellulose is dustier than fiberglass, and fiberglass is itchier than cellulose. R-38 cellulose is 10.77 inches thick; R-38 fiberglass is 12 inches thick. Fiberglass weighs less than cellulose, which is not a factor in an attic but may be a factor in a garage, for example. Cellulose and fiberglass have many similar characteristics, but at the end of the day, it comes down to a homeowner’s preference. nsulation is removed either by hand or by utilizing a commercial 23-HP Gas Powered Insulation Removal Vacuum attached to a 150 ft vacuum hose.
Once the insulation has been removed, or if there was no insulation to begin with, we will vacuum the floor of the entire attic using a 23-HP Commercial Vacuum.
After the insulation has been removed and the attic has been clean we'll sanitize the attic by use of a fogger to cover all the surfaces in the attic with a family-friendly sanitizer.
Now that the Attic Insulation Service is complete we'll cleanup our containment and work area to make it look like we were never there.
